The Moment

Some Syrahs are built around power.
Others are built around tension, savor, and detail.

The 2021 Madrona Bay Walla Walla Syrah is the kind of bottle that reminds you why Syrah can feel so captivating when it leans into its darker, more savory side. An intensely aromatic wine with blackberry, sandalwood, plum, and violets on the nose, followed by a palate of salted black plum, olives, fresh basil, smoked meat, and dried oregano. Bright acidity carries it all into a long finish.

This is not a soft, plush, fruit-first Syrah. It is a wine built around contrast — dark fruit and floral lift meeting olive, herbs, smoke, and mineral tension. The cellar work helps explain that shape: 50% whole cluster fermentation, 18 days on skins, 100% neutral oak barriques, and 30 months aged on lees. That gives the wine structure and nuance without burying its character under new oak.

What It Feels Like

Think grilled lamb, low light, a table that has settled in for the night, and a bottle that gets more compelling every time you come back to the glass.

What makes this wine work is the way it balances savory intensity with freshness. The blackberry and plum give it depth, the violets and sandalwood keep it lifted, and the olive, smoked meat, and oregano notes bring that unmistakable Syrah character that feels serious without becoming heavy. The bright acidity keeps the whole wine alive, which is a big part of why it feels so complete.

Why We Love This Bottle

A Syrah Built Around Character
This is not trying to be glossy or oversized. It leans into olive, smoke, herbs, and floral dark fruit in a way that feels classic and deeply satisfying.

Whole Cluster And Lees Aging Add Shape
The 50% whole cluster fermentation and 30 months on lees give the wine extra savory complexity, lift, and structure.

A Site With Real Identity
Ancient Stones Vineyard sounds exactly like the kind of place that gives Syrah its “rocks” character — basalt stones, sandy silt soils, and deep drainage all pointing toward a wine with distinctiveness and edge.
